Environmental assumptions & sources
The replacement starting value is a rounded production-only proxy: Apple reports 55 kg CO₂e over the lifecycle of an iPhone 17 (256 GB, US configuration), with approximately 77% attributed to production, including renewable-energy emissions: 55 × 77% ≈ 42 kg. It includes packaging and in-box accessories. It is not a footprint for your selected phone or an Australian-specific measurement.
For a refurbished replacement, enter a supplier’s refurbishment footprint using a comparable scope. The default models a new phone, not refurbished stock. No universal refurbished value is assumed.
Screen (5 kg) and battery (2 kg) are hypothetical editable placeholders, not measured GPR or iPhone repair footprints. They allow comparison where a part-specific assessment is unavailable; actual impacts depend on parts, workshop energy and sourcing. Screen type does not change these placeholders.
Transport starts at zero and is excluded unless entered. Charging, end-of-life processing, water use, mining impacts and other environmental effects are excluded. The original phone’s past production is not counted again; trade-in or resale does not earn a carbon credit. Purchases avoided are not automatically devices kept out of landfill.

Resale is simplified using today's values and annual depreciation; it is not an appraisal. No plan fees, interest, future repair bills or future price changes are included.
